This interactive webinar will provide an overview and legal definition of domestic child sex trafficking and delineate how girls are often criminalized for experiencing sexual violence, including analysis of the correlation between domestic child sex trafficking and juvenile justice involvement. We will explore racial and gender disparities among victims, risk factors, and the criminalization of trauma and abuse. We will also address how being a trafficking survivor impacts a girl pre- and post-justice involvement and identify strategies to reduce reliance on the justice system as a response to girls’ trauma.

Additionally, this webinar will highlight how federal, state, and local agencies are addressing the needs of victims of child sex trafficking through advocacy partnerships and innovative policies and practices. While all 50 states and the District of Columbia have enacted anti-trafficking laws, few state agencies have developed specific child sex trafficking policies or require specialized training to help professionals across sectors to identify and respond to the complex needs of child sex trafficking survivors. This workshop provides an opportunity for participants to learn about key anti-trafficking laws as well as local efforts to address the needs of child sex trafficking victims through cross system, trauma-informed approaches to identify, respond to, provide service for, and to prevent the re-victimization of child sex trafficking victims.

Presenters:

Cherice Hopkins is Senior Counsel at Rights4Girls, a human rights organization committed to ending gender-based violence in the U.S., where she engages in advocacy to enhance the safety and well-being of young women and girls who have been pushed to the margins of our society—particularly young women and girls of color—and improve responses to those who have experienced violence.  Her work includes policy reform, public education and awareness, training and technical assistance, research, and coalition building. Cherice is the co-author of three innovative reports: Girls and Gender-Expansive Youth and COVID-19, Survivor Protection: Reducing the Risk of Trauma to Child Sex Trafficking Victims, and Beyond the Walls: A Look at Girls in D.C.’s Juvenile Justice System. Cherice is also a member of the faculty of the National Judicial Institute on Domestic Child Sex Trafficking, and she co-manages the Girls at the Margin National Alliance.

 

 

 
 

Rebecca Burney is an attorney and the Youth Advocacy Coordinator at Rights4Girls, where she focuses on the intersection of female sexual abuse and juvenile justice system involvement in Washington, DC.  She has extensive experience working with survivors of sexual abuse and has supported youth through traditional teaching and mentorship. She has also worked directly with youth involved in the DC foster care system as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA). Rebecca holds a B.A. in Political Science and Ethnic Studies from Brown University, and a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center.  She is a member of the District of Columbia Bar.
