Sara Mahoney has been employed with the Allegany County Probation Department for 17 years as a Probation Officer. For the past 11 years she has been a specialized officer, responsible for the supervision and investigation of domestic violence cases as well as facilitating the Department’s DV Offender Program. She recently obtained an M.S. in Psychology/Forensic Psychology from Southern New Hampshire University. Currently, Sara is a Title 9 coordinator with State University of New York.
Sara has instructor certification as a Domestic Violence Instructor through the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center/US Department of Homeland Security and also is certified as an instructor on the Women’s Risk Needs Assessment (NIC) and the Domestic Violence Screening Instrument-Revised (NYS DCJS). She has obtained specialized training through the Advanced Institute on Non-Lethal Strangulation and Dr. Jacquelyn Campbell’s Danger Assessment. She is an active member of the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress/National Center for Crisis Management and was awarded a Certification in Domestic Violence with them.
She has been an active member in the County’s Coordinated Community Response to DV and Sexual Assault, sitting on the DV High Risk Team and Sex Assault Response Team, as well as the Law Enforcement Committee of the County DV Consortium for the past 15 years. Since 2018 she has been a member of the Training Institute on Strangulation Prevention’s Legal/Law Enforcement Advisory Board and is now a co-chair of the Domestic Violence Regional Council through the NYS Office on Prevention of Domestic Violence.
She holds a B.S. in Criminal Justice from SUNY Brockport and has been working in the field of domestic violence and sexual assault for 20 years, and has facilitated trainings on various DV topics at the local, state and national level to various human service providers, law enforcement attorneys and court personnel.
