Sheriff James Stuart is the 17th Sheriff of Anoka County since the office was established in 1857. Sheriff Stuart is active with the Minnesota Sheriff’s Association as an Executive Board Member and represents law enforcement on the MSA Legislative and Training Committees. He is also active on the national level with the National Sheriff’s Association as a member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors; the Domestic Violence and Crime Services Committee; the Youth Programs and Juvenile Justice Committee; and of the Global Policing Affairs Committee. Sheriff Stuart also serves as a Board member for the Equal Justice Committee, Hope 4 Youth, Play to Your Strengths and The Front Line Foundation. James is a Marine, and a graduate of St. Mary’s University and the 102nd session of the National Sheriff’s Institute and studied Public Safety Leadership at the University of MN, Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs. He is committed to the development of our youth, community partnerships and service that exceeds expectations. He was nominated for “National Sheriff of the Year” and was awarded the Medal of Merit by the National Sheriff’s Association in 2015, 2016 and 2019 for his contributions to the community and to the field of criminal justice. It is his belief that by working together, we can make a difference.
