In branches of the criminal justice field, people are exposed to situations where anger is likely. And while everyone experiences anger, how we express, manage, and respond to it may differ. This session unpacks the value of learning anger management in the criminal justice profession and how doing so benefits both the individuals and the organizations they represent.

Exploring this very specific facet of human emotion is Jack Harris. He combines his law enforcement, management, and behavioral science experience to provide results-oriented training. He previously worked in operational and administrative command assignments with the Tucson, Arizona Police Department and is a licensed counselor and a Board-Certified Expert in Traumatic Stress.

Jack’s presentation covered the following topics:

  • How anger is a natural response to threats that is neither good nor bad, but its expression and management determine its impact.
  • How ulterior emotions may be the reason behind and may manifest as anger.
  • External factors that are just part of reality and are beyond our control that tend to be triggers for anger.
  • The three common response options to triggers.
  • How uncontrolled anger can take a huge toll on people and cost them their health, careers, and relationships.
  • The cost of unmanaged anger in law enforcement in the form of civil litigation, citizen complaints, and public notoriety through viral videos.
  • A video demonstrating how an officer’s choice with a citizen determined the outcome of the interaction.
  • How the power of curiosity when approaching situations can change the outcomes of interactions, manage anger, and facilitate dialogue, compliance, and collaboration.
  • A rundown of things that do not work when faced with anger.
  • How taking responsibility for anger management, is essential for one’s overall well-being.
  • Strategies to create better outcomes whenever anger looms by:
    • Understanding that anger is normal and how it develops in terms of neurobiology.
    • Aligning expectations with reality to manage our response.
    • Acquiring skills that must be practiced, challenged, tested, and applied to manage anger.
    • Getting organizations and individuals on board to equip ourselves with anger management information and skills.
    • Practicing personal situational awareness by being aware of our emotions, behavior changes, and triggers.
    • Doing a reality check on how anger manifests physiologically.
  • What the formula for bad outcomes look like.
  • The central role of how we interpret things in creating better outcomes.
  • Ways to change self-talk through self-care with diet, nutrition, and sleep, mindfulness through breathing and meditation, and utilizing available preventative resources.
  • How individuals and organizations should place value in anger-management building skills.
  • How holding on to anger hurts the person feeling the anger more than the subject of their anger.
  • The importance of practicing and applying anger management skills and not just training or familiarizing with it.
