More value is being placed on wellness across public safety agencies in the US brought about by the recognition that wellness directly impacts workforce performance, recruitment, and retention. As a result of this, agencies are now looking at creating wellness programs to glean its expected benefits. But where to start with building a wellness program though? Wendy Hummel shares in this session her 10-step framework to develop a successful wellness program.

One of Justice Clearinghouse’s regular instructors, Wendy is a seasoned law enforcement officer with over 24 years of experience. She retired at the rank of detective from the Wichita Police Department but then rejoined the profession as the Health and Wellness Coordinator for the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office.

Points Wendy covered in this webinar include:

  • A brief background on Wendy’s experience in public safety and how her passion for personal and organizational wellness developed.
  • The numerous inquiries Wendy received as it relates to starting a program that prompted her to develop her 10-step framework.
  • How wellness benefits the individual, the organization, and the community.
  • The Conscious Leadership Framework and the concepts of self-leadership and radical responsibility.
  • Using data to better understand the wellness needs of the workforce and secure buy-in.
  • Facts and figures that emphasize the issues affecting policing as it relates to psychological distress, burnout, suicide, and how these impact community safety.
  • The greater risk for public safety professionals to suffer from health conditions and the fishbowl metaphor keeping them from realizing that there are better health outcomes possible.
  • Mindset preventing agencies from establishing a wellness program and the benefits that can be gained from it.
  • Wendy’s 10-step wellness programming framework.
    • Developing a plan grounded on research, relates to the workforce’s lived experience, is rendered based on preparation, and considers the costs related to establishing a program.
    • Obtaining buy-in from leaders, internal and external stakeholders through a process of education and feedback to sell the idea of a wellness program.
    • Choosing a wellness leader – considerations for the role in terms of job description, qualifications, and personal characteristics.
    • Assembling a team – how big it should be, the selection process considerations, and the team’s importance is establishing a culture that facilitates wellness.
    • Implementing an evidence-based program that balances practical application with evidence-based research when implementing wellness programs.
    • Connecting and collaborating with other agencies and entities that can provide guidance, insight, and resources in building a wellness program.
    • Educating and evaluating through consistent, vetted, and varied training, along with mechanisms to measure the program’s effectiveness in place.
    • Identifying the essential components to include in the wellness program based on the workforce’s feedback, needs, and existing resources.
    • Effectively launching a program by publicizing it across different channels and incentivizing utilization.
