What is excellence? Is it the same as perfectionism? How does one achieve excellence in the criminal justice profession? This webinar explores the nuances of excellence and how mindset, perseverance, and continuous improvement can result in excellence – not just in ourselves but in the people we work with and the organizations that we serve.

Leading this session is one of Justice Clearinghouse’s regular instructors, Dr. Jeff Fox. He has an extensive background in the criminal justice system having served the profession for 27 years across different capacities from military policeman, town police officer, trooper, sergeant, lieutenant, and training director. He also served as a statewide incident management program manager for the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Specifics of his presentation discussed:

  • The variance in how people define, view, and pursue excellence.
  • The concept of a fixed mindset and a growth mindset, what these look like, and how excellence thrives in the growth mindset.
  • Questions to reflect on as to whether you and the organization you work for espouse a growth mindset and encourage excellence.
  • Tips and guidelines to consider when working toward excellence that emphasize:
    • Personal commitment, self-belief, pride in one’s work, perseverance, internal motivation, focused effort, consistency, resilience, and grit.
    • Setting a benchmark, abiding by a schedule, building positive habits and routines, developing concrete strategies and plans, fostering a good work ethic, and being disciplined and willing to make sacrifices.
    • Continuous education, learning from experts, and sharing knowledge and talents with others.
    • Self-awareness of one’s needs, abilities, limits, strengths and weaknesses.
    • Practicing gratitude, compassion, and empathy for others.
    • Adaptability, taking risks, being brave, accepting the challenge, and being a leader.
    • Fostering relationships with positive and encouraging people as well as coaches and mentors who can provide advice, guidance, and help.
    • Embracing authenticity and speaking one’s truth.
    • Establishing a long-term goal.
    • Utilizing delegation when possible.
  • Perfectionism vs. Excellence
    • How perfectionism is often confused with excellence.
    • Distinguishing between the two based on their attainability, what they value and focus on, and how it impacts people’s self-worth, stress levels, expectations, and relationships.
    • How excellence is a result of consistent effort and wise choices.
  • Notes on achieving excellence that highlight:
    • Practicing self-awareness to overcome adversity and negativity and maintain commitment.
    • Focusing on self-improvement, raising the bar when it comes to our expectations of ourselves, striving for excellence in all we do, and participating actively in life.
    • Learning from the masters while remaining an original.
    • Observing the concept of Kaizen that encourages small changes that through time make a huge impact.
    • The importance of prioritization, planning for success, and taking compelling steps and action.
    • Being open to opportunities and looking at serving others.
    • All the work that is required to achieve excellence and success.
